Study Notes

Eye Structure and Function

  • The eyelid, composed of skin, muscles, and lashes, protects the eye from foreign objects through the blinking reflex and moves tears along the surface of the eyeball to keep it moist.

Conjunctiva

  • A thin membrane lining the insides of the eyelids and surface of the eyeball, reducing friction between the eyeball and eyelid during blinking.

Cornea

  • A colorless, transparent structure allowing light waves to enter the eye.

Sclera

  • The white part of the eye, providing protection and shape to the eye.

Iris

  • The colored portion of the eye, containing two sets of muscles that regulate the size of the pupil to control the amount of light entering the eye.

Pupil

  • An opening in the center of the iris, serving as a passageway for light.

Ciliary Body

  • Composed of ciliary muscles, responsible for increasing and decreasing the diameter of the lens.

Lens

  • A transparent, disc-shaped structure that focuses light waves on the retina.

Retina

  • The innermost layer of the eyeball, containing photoreceptor cells.

Optic Nerve

  • Responsible for taking information from the retina to the brain.
