Exponentiation

Exponentiation is a mathematical operation that represents repeated multiplication of a number by itself.

Notation

  • The exponentiation operation is denoted by a superscript number, called the exponent or power.
  • The number being multiplied is called the base.
  • The notation is: a^n, where a is the base and n is the exponent.

Properties

  • Product of Powers: a^n × a^m = a^(n+m)
  • Power of a Product: (a × b)^n = a^n × b^n
  • Power of a Power: (a^n)^m = a^(n×m)
  • Zero Exponent: a^0 = 1 (except for 0^0, which is undefined)
  • Negative Exponent: a^(-n) = 1/a^n

Rules

  • Exponentiation by a Whole Number: a^n = a × a × ... × a (n times)
  • Exponentiation by a Fraction: a^(m/n) = root(n)(a^m)
  • Exponentiation by a Negative Number: a^(-n) = 1/a^n

Applications

  • Exponentiation is used in many mathematical and scientific applications, such as:
    • Algebra
    • Geometry
    • Trigonometry
    • Calculus
    • Physics
    • Engineering
    • Computer Science

Special Cases

  • Square: a^2 = a × a
  • Cube: a^3 = a × a × a
  • Square Root: a^(1/2) = root(2)(a)
  • Cube Root: a^(1/3) = root(3)(a)

Learn about the notation, properties, and rules of exponentiation, including product of powers, power of a product, and power of a power. Explore its applications in various mathematical and scientific fields.
