Using Drones in Education
- The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has a program called the Unmanned Aircraft Systems Collegiate Training Initiative (UAS-CTI) designed for universities, colleges, and technical schools that prepare students for careers in drones.
- Drones flown for educational purposes are regulated under the Exception for Limited Recreational Operations of Unmanned Aircraft or under the Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems Rule.
- Educational organizations such as institutions of higher education, Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps (JROTC) programs, and educational programs chartered by an FAA-recognized Community Based Organization can operate drones under the Exception for Limited Recreational Operations.
- FAA-Recognized Identification Areas (FRIAs) are locations where Remote ID is not required, and educational institutions can request the establishment of a FRIA.
- The FAA has a program called DronePro, where volunteers work with the FAA to promote safety and can come talk to students or set up flight demonstrations.
- The FAA also has the FAA Safety Team (FAASTeam), and educators can volunteer as a DronePro or become a FAASTeam Member to attend webinars and events.
- The FAA has established the Unmanned Aircraft Systems Collegiate Training Initiative (UAS-CTI) Program to recognize institutions that prepare students for careers in drones.
- Public two-year institutions of higher education that participate in the UAS-CTI program will be designated as members of the Consortium for Small Unmanned Aircraft System Technology Training.
- Participating institutions will collaborate with the FAA, industry, local governments, law enforcement, and regional economic development entities to address labor force needs in the UAS-related field.
- USI offers safety-based certification to prepare students for careers in drone technology in various industry clusters represented by Career and Technical Education (CTE).
- Santa Ana College offers drone training courses, including FAA rules and regulations, drone license exam prep, and specialized courses for different industries.
- Using drones in the classroom can engage students in project-based learning, differentiated instruction, and align with common core standards. Drones provide real-world applications of STEM concepts and can improve student engagement.
