Study Notes
Lungs as an Excretory Organ
- Lungs are spongy structures located inside the chest cavity.
- They help to remove carbon dioxide and excess water vapor from the body during exhalation.
- During cellular respiration, cells produce energy and carbon dioxide as a waste product.
- This carbon dioxide diffuses into the bloodstream and then into the alveoli of the lungs.
- Oxygen is taken into the body during inhalation, and carbon dioxide is released during exhalation.
Kidneys as an Excretory Organ
- Kidneys are located in the upper part of the abdominal cavity.
- They filter waste products from the blood, producing urine.
- Pure blood is returned to the heart.
- Urine is collected by the ureters and stored in the urinary bladder.
Body Systems
-
Integumentary System:
- Includes the skin,
- protects the body from germs and injury.
- Sweat and blood vessels are located within the skin.
-
Circulatory System:
- Includes the heart and blood vessels.
- Transports blood throughout the body.
- Delivers oxygen, nutrients, and removes waste.
-
Respiratory System:
- Includes the lungs and air passages.
- Facilitates gas exchange (oxygen in, carbon dioxide out).
-
Nervous System:
- Includes the brain, spinal cord, nerves, and sense organs.
- Coordinates and regulates body functions.
-
Urinary System:
- Includes the kidneys, bladder, ureters, and urethra.
- Filters waste from the blood, produces urine, and eliminates it from the body.
Cells and Tissues
- A cell is the basic unit of life in all organisms.
- Cells have different shapes and sizes, and each type has specific functions.
- Different cells working together form tissues.
- Tissues are groups of similar cells with a common function.
- Organs are made up of different tissues working together.
- Organs that work together form body systems.
