Chapter 3 Warehouse Process Types and Warehouse Tasks

• The warehouse process type is determined during inbound delivery creation or a warehouse request document carries the warehouse process type and other warehouse process-specific information.
• An inbound delivery notification contains delivery information specific to the SAP S/4HANA system in a decentralized EWM landscape.

Warehouse Process Type Determination Fields:

• Warehouse number

• Document type

• Item type

• Delivery priority

• The warehouse process type determination process is customized in EWM

• Not all of the above information is required for warehouse process type determination

• If the system finds a warehouse process type with this combination, then it is applied to the item on a warehouse request.

• Source and destination storage types/bins can be defined at the warehouse process type level.

• If a storage type is not defined in the warehouse process type, then the system tries to find it from a process step or a rule-based indicator.

• Source storage types are identified based on the staging area/door determination group.

• A warehouse process type defines the movement of a product in the warehouse at the item level

• The system determines the source or destination storage type using information such as product master, stock type, and party entitled to dispose.

Warehouse Tasks:

• Product warehouse tasks

• HU warehouse tasks

• EWM creates warehouse tasks at the product level or the HU level since the HU contains the product to be moved within the warehouse.

• Products can be stored in storage bins either in an HU or directly as products.

• An activity area is a combination of multiple storage bins based on the activity; it is not defined in the warehouse process type definition.

• A warehouse order creation rule, a storage process, and a priority are defined in the warehouse process type definition.

• A warehouse order creation rule is also defined at the warehouse process type level.

• When defined at this level, the system applies the rules from this warehouse order creation rule to the warehouse tasks to group tasks in the warehouse order.

• If a warehouse order creation rule is not defined at the warehouse process type level, then the system uses a warehouse order creation rule search sequence to find the warehouse order creation rule.

• A process block profile is defined in the warehouse product master data, in the warehouse data view.

• The purpose of a process block profile is to control certain processes at the product level, such as no putaway or picking for a specific product, blocking processes either as an error or with a warning.

• A process type control indicator is defined at the warehouse product master level and helps in warehouse process type determination.

• For products requiring putaway using POSC, a different warehouse process type can be specified compared to products that don’t require putaway with POSC.

• When an outbound delivery order or an inbound delivery is created in EWM, the system determines warehouse-specific attributes, such as the warehouse process type for a specific outbound delivery, based on parameters like delivery document type, item type, and control indicators from the product master.

• A putaway warehouse task is created with reference to an inbound delivery; it can either be a product warehouse task or a handling warehouse task.

• For an outbound delivery or picking process, a stock removal warehouse process category is used to picking warehouse tasks.

• The warehouse process category determines the direction of product movement within a warehouse.

• A warehouse process category defines the nature of movement in a warehouse.

• These warehouse process categories are predefined in the EWM system

Warehouse Process Categories:

• Putaway

• Physical inventory

• Stock removal

• Goods receipt posting

• Goods issue posting

• Internal movements

• Activities represent goods movements within an activity area, triggering goods movements.

• Examples of warehouse activities include performing physical inventory, picking, replenishment, and putaway.

• An activity must be uniquely assigned to a warehouse process category.
