This set the stage for later scholars like Livy and Tacitus, whose accounts were often used to legitimize the power of their own contemporary rulers.
During the Middle Ages, church leaders created texts called annals that listed important dates and events connected with religious life. In this period, historians tended to focus on dramatic stories highlighting significant moments instead of specific details in daily life.
