    Study Notes

    Creating a Time Series Workfile

    • A time series workfile can be created by importing data from an Excel file, where the first column contains dates and the next columns contain information on main US macro variables.
    • To create a workfile, click File → Open → Foreign Data as Workfile, select the directory, and open the file.
    • The Excel Read dialog appears, and clicking Finish loads the data into the workfile.
    • EViews automatically detects the time series data and indexes the workfile by date.

    EViews Workfiles

    • EViews workfiles are place-holders of EViews objects and are required for any work in EViews.
    • A workfile can be created by either structuring a "blank" workfile or by reading from a foreign source.
    • Every workfile contains one or more workfile pages, each with its own objects.

Describing the Structure of a Workfile

    • To create a new workfile, the structure of the data needs to be described, including the frequency, start and end dates, and number of observations.
    • There are three general types of workfile structure: Dated (regular frequency), Unstructured/Undated (mostly cross-sectional data), and Balanced Panel (panel data).
    • A simple workfile with one page has one structure type, while multiple page workfiles may have different structures.

    Creating a Workfile

    • To create a new workfile, click File > New > Workfile… and specify the workfile structure type, date specification, and workfile name.
    • The Workfile Create dialog box opens up, where the workfile structure type, date specification, and workfile name can be specified.
    • The workfile structure type can be Dated, Unstructured/Undated, or Balanced Panel.
    • The date specification includes the frequency, start date/time, and end date/time.

    Creating a Dated Workfile

    • To create a dated workfile, select Dated-regular frequency from the drop-down menu of "Workfile structure type".
    • Specify the frequency, start date, and end date of the data.

    Creating an Undated Workfile

    • To create an undated workfile, select Unstructured/Undated from the drop-down menu of "Workfile structure type".
    • Specify the number of observations in the "Data Range" field.
