Study Notes
EViews Workfiles
- EViews main operating principles involve creating workfiles, which are placeholders for EViews objects.
- A workfile must be created, and it can contain one or more workfile pages, each with its own objects.
Creating a Workfile
- To create a new workfile, you can either create a "blank" workfile or create a workfile by reading from a foreign source.
- To create a workfile, you need to describe the structure of your data, which determines how many observations (rows) every series in the workfile page contains.
- There are three general types of workfile structure: dated, unstructured/undated, and balanced panel.
Creating a Workfile by Describing its Structure
- A simple workfile with one page has one structure type, but multiple page workfiles can have different structures.
- To create a new workfile, click File > New > Workfile, and then specify the general structure type, date specification, and workfile name and first page (optional).
Creating a Dated Workfile
- To create a workfile with dated data, select the "Dated-regular frequency" structure type and specify the frequency and start and end dates.
- EViews creates a dated workfile with the specified frequency and dates.
Creating an Undated Workfile
- To create a workfile with undated data, select the "Unstructured/Undated" structure type and specify the number of observations.
- EViews creates an undated workfile with the specified number of observations.
Creating a Workfile From a Foreign Data Source
- EViews can create a new workfile by opening data from a variety of formats, including Excel, HTML, CSV, ASCII, RATS, Stata, SPSS, and SAS.
- Simply open the file in EViews, and the application will automatically recognize the format and structure of the file.
- You can open a file in EViews by dragging and dropping it into the main EViews window or by clicking File > Open > Foreign Data as Workfile.
Frequency Conversion
- EViews allows you to easily convert lower frequency data to higher frequency data.
- To convert lower frequency data to higher frequency data, open the workfile, right-click on the series, and select Copy, and then paste it into the destination page.
