What is The European Union
- The EU is a unique partnership between 27 European countries, known as Member States, or EU countries.
- The EU covers much of the European continent
- A population of around 447 million people call the EU home
- That is approximately 6% of the world's population.
- Citizens of the EU countries are also EU citizens.
- Not all European countries are members of the EU
- The United Kingdom voted to leave the EU in June 2016, and left in 2020.
Common Values of EU states
- Each EU country has its own culture, language and traditions
- All share the same common values which they must comply with as members of the European Union.
- One fundamental value that unites all EU countries is democracy
- Only democratic countries can be members of the EU.
- Other values that are common to all EU countries are
- Respect for human dignity
- Freedom
- Equality
- The rule of law
- Respect for human rights, including the rights of people belonging to minority groups.
- The member states are obliged to comply with and protect children's rights as part of human rights.
Creation and Expansion of the EU
- The European Union was created in 1957 and has grown from 6 to 27 countries since.
- European countries joined forces to build a better future together.
- France's Foreign Minister, Robert Schuman, proposed merging European production of coal and steel on 9 May 1950.
- The European Coal and Steel Community was founded in 1952 with the goal of preventing any country from secretly arming itself against others.
- Six neighboring countries founded the community: Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg and the Netherlands.
- The Treaty of Rome was signed in 1957, establishing the European Economic Community, and came into force in 1958
- In 1973 Denmark, Ireland and the United Kingdom joined the European Economic Community
- Greece became a member of the EU in 1981, followed by Portugal and Spain in 1986.
- The EU was created in 1993; Austria, Finland and Sweden joined in 1995, making the EU membership of 15.
- Eight central and eastern Europe countries entered the EU in 2004 Czechia, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia-Slovenia
- The Mediterranean islands of Cyprus and Malta were added during that same year
- Bulgaria and Romania joined in 2007
- Croatia joined in 2013
Nobel Peace Prize
- The EU was set up to secure lasting peace among its members.
- Internal conflicts and opportunities for war to break out between Europeans have been greatly reduced since its establishment
- The European Union was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2012 in recognition of work for peace, democracy and human rights in Europe and around the world
- The EU decided to donate the EUR 930,000 prize money including a further 930,000 from the EU itself to children who are denied the chance to grow up in peace.
How does the EU work?
- The European Parliament is the collective voice of ordinary people as the only directly elected EU institution.
- To vote in the EU elections a person just needs to have EU citizenship
- In 2019, the previous EU elections were held - the next are in 2024.
- Anyone at the age of 18 has the right to vote in all EU countries – excluding Greece, Austria and Malta
- Austria and Malta offer the opportunity to those of 16
- Greece offers 17 year olds the chance
- These take place 12 times a year in Strasbourg, France and up to 6 times a year in Brussels, Belgium.
- 705 Parliament members are called MEPs.
- The EU Parliament takes actions on EU laws along with the Council of the European Union.
- Approves The Budget
- Has the power to approve or dismiss the European Commission President
European Council
- Is commonly known as the European Summits meetings
- Assembles the elected leaders of the EU members, heads of government/state
- The meetings of the leaders occur at least 4 times a year
- A president who is elected every 2 1/2 years chairs the European Council
- Does not pass EU laws - that is the job of the European Parliament and Council of the European Union)
Council of the European Union
- The ministers meet from the EU countries and discuss to make decisions on current EU laws and policies.
Voting Within EU
- Under qualified-majority voting, each minister casts one vote for or against a proposal.
- The 'double majority' to make adopt a solid action has requirements
European Commission
- It is the executive branch made up of 27 Commissioners who each preside over their EU country.
- Each Commissioner gets assigned a certain policy area to manage such as energy, the economy or the environment.
The Court of Justice of the European Union
- With more 70 years in the system, the European Court of Justice decides and interprets in the EU laws
