What is The European Union

  • The EU is a unique partnership between 27 European countries, known as Member States, or EU countries.
  • The EU covers much of the European continent
  • A population of around 447 million people call the EU home
  • That is approximately 6% of the world's population.
  • Citizens of the EU countries are also EU citizens.
  • Not all European countries are members of the EU
  • The United Kingdom voted to leave the EU in June 2016, and left in 2020.

Common Values of EU states

  • Each EU country has its own culture, language and traditions
  • All share the same common values which they must comply with as members of the European Union.
  • One fundamental value that unites all EU countries is democracy
    • Only democratic countries can be members of the EU.

    • The rule of law
    • Respect for human rights, including the rights of people belonging to minority groups.

Creation and Expansion of the EU

  • The European Union was created in 1957 and has grown from 6 to 27 countries since.
  • European countries joined forces to build a better future together.
  • France's Foreign Minister, Robert Schuman, proposed merging European production of coal and steel on 9 May 1950.
  • The European Coal and Steel Community was founded in 1952 with the goal of preventing any country from secretly arming itself against others.
  • Six neighboring countries founded the community: Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg and the Netherlands.
  • The Treaty of Rome was signed in 1957, establishing the European Economic Community, and came into force in 1958

Nobel Peace Prize

  • The EU was set up to secure lasting peace among its members.

How does the EU work?

    • Austria and Malta offer the opportunity to those of 16
    • Greece offers 17 year olds the chance
  • These take place 12 times a year in Strasbourg, France and up to 6 times a year in Brussels, Belgium.
  • 705 Parliament members are called MEPs.
  • The EU Parliament takes actions on EU laws along with the Council of the European Union.

European Council

  • Is commonly known as the European Summits meetings
  • Assembles the elected leaders of the EU members, heads of government/state
