Study Notes

Otto von Bismarck orchestrated the unification of the German states under Prussian leadership. Otto von Bismarck did not really care about Africa, since Leopold II from Belgium is the country in the lowlands and is something called the Benelux. Belgium only became a country because of Napoleon, so Leopold is the king of a little, powerless country, no trade power, no military power of Germany, and Leopold desperately wants Belgium to have a colony. There is plenty of territory that he wanted for a colony. But Leopold was the only person who thought that they should have a colony. But it is a constitutional monarchy so the government overrules him. Both of these people have the greatest impact on the   colonization of Africa even though they are separate.
