Study Notes
Cell Division and the Cell Cycle
- Cell division involves two phases: mitosis (division of the nucleus) and cytokinesis (division of the cytoplasm)
Phases of Mitosis
- Interphase: long period of the cell cycle between one mitosis and the next, includes G1, S, and G2 phases
- Prophase: chromosomes condense and become visible, centrioles form and move towards opposite ends of the cell, nuclear membrane dissolves, and mitotic spindle forms
- Prometaphase: nuclear envelope breaks down, microtubules attach to kinetochores on chromosomes
- Metaphase: chromosomes align at the metaphase plate, an imaginary plane that bisects the cell
- Metaphase to Anaphase Transition: sister chromatids separate and begin to move to opposite poles of the cell
- Anaphase: sister chromatids separate completely and are pulled to opposite poles of the cell
- Telophase: nuclear envelope reforms around each set of chromosomes, chromosomes decondense, and spindle fibers disappear
- Cytokinesis: cytoplasm divides, forming two daughter cells that are genetically identical to the parent cell
Cytokinesis
- Division of the cytoplasm, resulting in two daughter cells
- usually occurs with mitosis, but in some organisms this is not the case
Mitosis
- nuclear/chemical events resulting in two daughter nuclei with identical genetic material to each other and to the mother cell
- consists of prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase
Cell Cycle
- The sequence of events that a cell goes through from one cell division to the next
- Includes interphase and the four phases of mitosis
