What is the main event of the telophase stage?

Nuclear envelope reforms around each set of chromosomes

Study Notes

Cell Division and the Cell Cycle

  • Cell division involves two phases: mitosis (division of the nucleus) and cytokinesis (division of the cytoplasm)

Phases of Mitosis

  • Interphase: long period of the cell cycle between one mitosis and the next, includes G1, S, and G2 phases
  • Prophase: chromosomes condense and become visible, centrioles form and move towards opposite ends of the cell, nuclear membrane dissolves, and mitotic spindle forms
  • Prometaphase: nuclear envelope breaks down, microtubules attach to kinetochores on chromosomes
  • Metaphase: chromosomes align at the metaphase plate, an imaginary plane that bisects the cell
  • Metaphase to Anaphase Transition: sister chromatids separate and begin to move to opposite poles of the cell
  • Anaphase: sister chromatids separate completely and are pulled to opposite poles of the cell
  • Telophase: nuclear envelope reforms around each set of chromosomes, chromosomes decondense, and spindle fibers disappear
  • Cytokinesis: cytoplasm divides, forming two daughter cells that are genetically identical to the parent cell

Cytokinesis

  • Division of the cytoplasm, resulting in two daughter cells
  • usually occurs with mitosis, but in some organisms this is not the case

Mitosis

  • nuclear/chemical events resulting in two daughter nuclei with identical genetic material to each other and to the mother cell
  • consists of prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase

Cell Cycle

  • The sequence of events that a cell goes through from one cell division to the next
  • Includes interphase and the four phases of mitosis

This quiz covers the process of cell division in eukaryotic cells, including cytokinesis and mitosis. It explains the stages of cell division and how they occur.
