Study Notes
Ethics
- Ethics is a system of moral principles that affect behavior, decision-making, and personal/social lives.
- It's also described as moral philosophy.
- Ethical considerations are crucial in how companies market their products.
Entertainment & Marketing
- Entertainment includes movies, television, radio, music, concerts, video games, theme parks, etc.
- The average American household spends approximately $2,900 annually on entertainment.
- Spending varies widely, with high-demand entertainment options (like Taylor Swift tickets) exhibiting large price fluctuation.
- The entertainment industry is a substantial $200 billion industry focused on entertainment, excitement and amusement.
- Entertainment is influenced by media companies who dictate what types of entertainment consumers view and purchase.
- Entertainment marketing is the process of promoting entertainment products to satisfy customer needs and wants.
Types of Brands & Strategies
- There are three types of brands: manufacturer, intermediary, and generic
- Manufacturer brands are owned by the product producer, offering various strategies:
- Multi-purpose branding: One brand name for all products. A benefit is the promotion is simplified, but if a product fails, the entire brand may suffer.
- Multi-branding: Each product in a line has its own name. A benefit is that a product failure doesn't affect the others. However, it's more expensive to individually market several products,
- Co-branding: Two or more manufacturers collaborate on a product. An advantage is reaching more customers, but a negative is that a failing partner can harm the other company's reputation.
- Intermediary brands connect buyers and sellers without owning the product. Examples include agents for musicians or actors.
- Generic brands represent a product category without a specific brand name.
New Product Development
- Companies develop new products to satisfy consumer wants and needs; this entails researching and analyzing factors including competition and consumer preferences.
- New product development frequently involves a series of steps including planning a protocol to identify consumers' needs, conducting SWOT analyses, testing consumer feedback, analyzing costs and legal factors, developing prototypes, and eventually implementing a launch.
Social Media Marketing Campaigns
- A social media marketing campaign is a coordinated effort to raise customer awareness and loyalty through social media.
- Successful examples like #ShotoniPhone (Apple) and Spotify Wrapped highlight strategies that effectively enhance brand awareness.
- The aims of marketing campaigns includes goal setting, identifying the target audience, messaging and branding, selecting channels, budgeting, and evaluation.
Social Media Marketing
- Data mining on social media involves analyzing user-generated content (posts, comments, tweets) to gain insights about users or conduct research.
- Social media influencers promote products or services to their followers and may have varying levels of influence. Types of influencers range from nano-influencers to mega-influencers across diverse categories (health, food, family, etc.).
- Companies partner with influencers as a way to reach a large audience for a lower cost than traditional advertising. The success of influencer marketing is measured by factors such as engagement rate, campaign length, product industry, and influencer credibility.
Event Management & Promotion
- Event management encompasses planning, organizing, executing, and evaluating events, crucial in the entertainment industry.
- Important elements include venue selection, location, capacity, budgeting, marketing strategies (social media, influencer partnerships, advertising), logistic planning, and evaluation of success.
Product Life Cycle
- The product life cycle demonstrates the stages from introduction to decline.
- The four stages include introduction, growth, maturity, and decline. Each stage has key features and marketing strategies catered to the stage's specific challenges.
- Introduction is characterized by low sales, high marketing costs, and focus on building awareness.
- Growth demonstrates increasing sales and market share expansion.
- Maturity is when market saturation leads to intense competition, and companies attempt to maintain share with price wars or product differentiation.
- Decline sees sales diminishing, impacting profitability and potentially requiring companies to phase out products.
Experiential Marketing
- Experiential marketing creates deeply memorable experiences.
- Experiences are successful because they foster engagement, emotional connections, and brand authenticity, leading to lasting customer relationships.
- Types of experiential marketing include pop-up events, sponsorship of live events, interactive technologies, and branded content. Experiential marketing benefits include stronger customer relationships, increased engagement through participation and social sharing, and brand loyalty creation.
