Code of Ethics for Civil Engineers
- The Philippine Institute of Civil Engineers' Code of Ethics is based on four fundamental principles:
- Upholding the integrity, honor, and dignity of the civil engineering profession
- Being honest and impartial, and serving with fidelity to the public, employers, employees, and clients
- Striving to increase the competence and prestige of the civil engineering profession
- Supporting professional and technical societies
- The code also includes six fundamental canons:
- Hold paramount the safety, health, and welfare of the public
- Perform services only in areas of competence
- Issue public statements only in an objective and truthful manner
- Act for each employer or client as faithful agents or trustees
- Avoid deceptive acts
- Conduct themselves honorably, responsibly, ethically, and lawfully
Professional Obligations
- Civil engineers must perform services as stated in Section 2 of the Republic Act No. 544 "Civil Engineering Law" Article 1 Section 2
- They must also adhere to the Civil Engineering Code of Ethics and Obligations
Engineering Ethics
- Ethics is the study of moral values, issues, and decisions involved in engineering practice
- Engineering ethics involves responsibilities, ideal character traits, social policies, and relationships desirable for individuals and corporations
- The Civil Engineer may recommend specialist suppliers and/or contractors, but must co-ordinate the design and be relieved of responsibility for the design, manufacture, installation, and performance of such parts or works
- The Civil Engineer must notify the client of any interest that significantly conflicts with the client's interests under their contract
