Standards of Ethical Conduct for Physical Therapist Assistants
- The Standards of Ethical Conduct delineate the ethical responsibilities of physical therapist assistants, as determined by the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA)'s House of Delegates.
- The standards are based on core values: accountability, altruism, collaboration, compassion and caring, duty, excellence, integrity, and social responsibility.
- Physical therapist assistants are obligated to help patients achieve greater independence, health, and wellness.
- The standards provide a framework for ethical conduct; however, additional advice or consultation may be necessary in complex situations.
- The APTA Guide for Conduct and Core Values serve as supplementary resources.
Standard #1: Respect for Individuals
- Physical therapist assistants must treat all individuals with respect, regardless of demographics, socioeconomic status, or health conditions (e.g., age, gender, race, etc.)
- Personal biases should be recognized and avoided, and discrimination in service delivery should not occur.
Standard #2: Trustworthiness and Compassion
- Physical therapist assistants should prioritize the best interests of patients and clients over their own.
- Interventions should be provided with compassion and consideration for individual and cultural differences.
- Patients and clients must receive clear information about interventions.
- Confidential patient information should be protected and disclosed only with authorization or as legally required.
Standard #3: Sound Decision-Making
- Decisions should be made in collaboration with the physical therapist and guided by the best-practice standards within the profession.

- Exploitation of those under their supervision or authority is prohibited.
- Misconduct by other professionals should be discouraged, and appropriate authorities informed when necessary.
- All reported abuses of vulnerable adults or children must be reported to appropriate authorities.

- Physical therapist assistants must comply with all relevant legal and ethical regulations.
- They must collaborate with physical therapists to ensure quality care and promote patient/client safety.
- Researchers must adhere to participant protection standards.
- Colleagues experiencing issues that may affect practice should be encouraged to seek assistance.
