Study Notes
Maternal health services refer to the comprehensive range of healthcare interventions aimed at promoting optimal pregnancy outcomes, ensuring safe deliveries, and addressing maternal complications during pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum. These services encompass prenatal care, labor and delivery management, postpartum care, contraceptive counseling, and family planning support.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has established standards for essential maternal health services:
- Antepartum Care: This includes screening for risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, syphilis, HIV, hepatitis B, and malaria; follow-up, regular antenatal consultation visits; blood tests; urine test; ultrasound; nutritional advice; and counseling on maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality prevention.
- Childbirth: Safe deliveries involve skilled attendants during labor and delivery, including continuous medical education, emergency obstetric care, and the availability of basic life-saving equipment.
- Postpartum Care: Postpartum care involves monitoring, care, and treatment of newborn infants within the first week after birth, which is crucial for detecting sepsis, respiratory distress syndrome, and other early complications caused by infections and congenital disorders.
- Contraceptive Counseling: Family planning services aim to ensure that women have access to information and methods for planning their families, spaced pregnancies, and limiting the number of children they will have.
In many low-income countries, maternal death rates remain unacceptably high due to poor accessibility to these necessary services. However, with improvements in quality coverage and better utilization of services across all settings, steps can be taken to reduce maternal deaths.
