Study Notes
Epithelial Tissues
- Epithelial tissue lines and covers many organs and structures within the body
- It's found in linings of the stomach, blood vessels, kidneys, and liver
- Cells are tightly packed, forming a continuous layer with no spaces between them
- Cells often have a cementing material between them
- Cells are permeable, allowing for gas and substance exchange
- Tissue rests on a basement membrane (non-cellular) connecting it to underlying connective tissue
- Epithelial tissue does not have a direct blood supply
Functions of Epithelial Tissue
- Protection: Protects underlying tissues from injury, chemicals, bacteria, and viruses
- Protects the buccal cavity, reproductive tract, and nasal passage
- Secretion: Secretes substances such as sweat, saliva, hormones, and digestive juices, including enzymes
- Absorption: Absorbs digested food in the small intestine
- Excretion: Removes waste products in the excretory system
- Sensation: Sensory epithelium in the nasal tract and taste buds receive sensations
- Regeneration: Heals and regenerates wounds
