What is the name of the tissue that makes up the inner lining of organs?

Epithelial tissue

Study Notes

Epithelial Tissues

  • Classified into three types based on cell shape: squamous, columnar, and cuboidal
  • Squamous epithelium: cells appear flat, hexagonal or irregular in shape, line the blood vessels, lungs, heart, oesophagus, and epidermis of the skin
  • Columnar epithelium: cells appear column-like, longer than wide, with nucleus at the base, found in stomach, intestines, and pharynx
  • Cuboidal epithelium: cells appear square in shape, with centrally located nucleus, found in thyroid gland, kidney tubules, salivary glands, pancreas, and liver

Functions of Epithelial Tissues

  • Protective tissue, covering outer surface of the body and lining internal organs
  • Protects the body and organs from injury, germs, and more
  • Specialized to secrete enzymes in salivary and gastric glands for digestion
  • Certain epithelial cells absorb nutrients from digested food
  • Also helps remove waste products from the body in sweat glands and kidneys

Animal Tissues

  • Classified into four basic types: epithelial, muscular, nervous, and connective tissues
  • Each type has distinct characteristics based on cell type, intercellular material, and function

This quiz covers the classification of epithelial tissues based on cell shape, including squamous epithelium and its characteristics.
