Epithelial Membranes Overview
- Membranes are flat sheets of tissue covering or lining body parts.
- Epithelial membranes consist of epithelial tissue combined with underlying connective tissue.
Types of Epithelial Membranes
-
Cutaneous Membranes:
- Known as skin, it is a dry membrane covering the body's external surface.
- Comprises the epidermis (keratinized stratified squamous epithelium) and the dermis (loose/areolar connective tissue and dense irregular connective tissue).
-
Mucous Membranes:
- Called mucosa; these are wet membranes lining cavities that open to the exterior.
- Found in the digestive, respiratory, reproductive, and part of the urinary tracts.
- Composed of lining epithelium and lamina propria (loose areolar connective tissue) that may contain goblet cells for mucous secretion, preventing drying out.
-
Serous Membranes:
- Known as serosa; these wet membranes line body cavities that do not communicate with the exterior.
- Comprised of mesothelium (simple squamous epithelium) along with underlying loose areolar connective tissue.
Serous Membrane Functions
- Serous membranes cover organs within the ventral body cavity (viscera) and the walls of that cavity.
- Classified into parietal layers (lining cavity walls) and visceral layers (adhering to organ surfaces).
- A thin layer of serous fluid exists between parietal and visceral layers, minimizing friction as the viscera move.
Specific Serous Membranes
-
Parietal/Visceral Pleura:
- Lines the pleural cavity and surfaces of the lungs.
-
Parietal/Visceral Pericardium:
- Lines the pericardial cavity and surfaces of the heart.
-
Parietal/Visceral Peritoneum:
- Lines the abdominopelvic cavity and surfaces of the visceral organs located inside.
