- Multilateral Financial Institutions (MFIs) are international organizations
- MFIs aim to promote economic and social development in poorer nations
- MFIs provide advice, funding, and assistance in implementation of development projects
- MFIs share common objectives to reduce global poverty and improve living conditions
- Example MFIs include: African Development Bank, Asian Development Bank, Caribbean Development Bank, Inter-American Development Bank, The World Bank, European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, Islamic Development Bank
- MFIs focus on providing finance and building capacity
- Key objectives of MFIs include: reduce global poverty, improve living conditions, promote regional cooperation and integration, and promote sustainable economic, social, and institutional development
- Environmental and Social values include: Air and water quality, Biodiversity, Landscapes aesthetics, Spiritual value of nature, natural resources, and Ecosystem services
- Social values: Human health, Community integrity, Property and belongings, Fairness and equity, Right and Protection for vulnerable
- A new integrated approach to environment and social safeguards is adopted to address potential environmental and social risks and impacts

They include: Environmental and Social Assessment (ESAP), Natural Habitats, Forests, Pest Management, Physical Cultural Resources, Safety of Dams, Indigenous Peoples, Involuntary Resettlement, Projects in International Waterways, and Projects in Disputed Areas
- Reasons for World Bank Safeguard Policies include: minimizing negative impacts on the environment and people, safeguarding social equity, enhancing environmental and environmental sustainability
- Safeguards classify project impacts by severity, sensitivity of impacted areas, level of impact, importance/precedence of an impact, and considering the spatial and temporal aspects of the impact
- Policies aim to review and oversee mitigation and risk levels to align with impacts
The Environmental and Social Framework (ESF)
- The World Bank adopted the ESF in 2016, to replace the operational safeguard policies (OPs)
- The ESF applies to new World Bank investment projects, while previous projects continue under the OPs

- Category A: sensitive, diverse, or unprecedented, which may affect a broad area beyond the project site
