Questions and Answers

What is the function of the combustion chamber in gas turbines?

  • To regulate the speed of the gas turbine
  • To cool down the high-pressure air before mixing it with fuel (correct)
  • To supply air at sufficient pressure to the combustors
  • To convert hot-gas flow into rotational mechanical energy

Which type of compressor is generally limited to two stages due to efficiency loss?

  • Axial flow compressors
  • None of the above
  • Both types of compressors
  • Centrifugal compressors (correct)

Study Notes

  • Envelopes and sleeves form the cylinder of an engine.
  • Sleeves are the walls of the combustion chamber and are subject to high wear.
  • There are two main types of removable sleeves: wet and dry.
  • Removable sleeves allow for easier maintenance and reduce costs.
  • Sleeves must resist the pressure of the cooling water circuit and allow for laminar flow.
  • Wet sleeves have difficulty cooling the upper part, but tangential boring has improved this.
  • Cavitation erosion of the sleeve's external surface can be minimized with water treatment, special coatings, or a tighter piston-sleeve clearance.
  • Sleeves must be made of appropriate materials to withstand wear and tear.
  • Sleeves play a role in controlling lubrication and act as "intake and exhaust valves" in 2-stroke engines.
  • Removable sleeves can reduce the size and complexity of cylinder blocks.
