    Study Notes

    • Four types of endocytosis: phagocytosis, pinocytosis, receptor-mediated endocytosis, caveolae-based endocytosis
    • Phagocytosis: process of engulfing large molecules or cells, membrane folds around the object, forms a vesicle, non-specific
    • Pinocytosis: process of taking up small dissolved substances and liquids, membrane forms small vesicles, non-specific
    • Receptor-mediated endocytosis: specific process of recognizing and targeting a substrate, integral membrane proteins (receptor proteins) bind to a target, vesicle forms around the target, specific
    • Clathrin: protein that coats vesicles during endocytosis, not involved in caveolae-based endocytosis
    • Caveolae: pockets in the plasma membrane, do not have a clathrin-based protein lining, have caveolins as membrane proteins, still debated if they involve endocytosis but caveolin-1 is known to be involved
    • Lysosomes: structures in the cell containing digestive enzymes, vesicles fuse with lysosomes, breakdown food and foreign material, recycling and reuse of digested material, digestive enzymes work optimally in acidic environment
    • Exocytosis: process of exporting substances from the cell through a vesicle fusing with the cell membrane, eliminates waste that the cell cannot digest, not all material is destined for degradation in lysosomes.
