Study Notes
EGR Valve Function
- Reduces NOx gas production in the combustion chamber.
GVWR Determination
- Use the vehicle weight placard to find Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR).
Valid Registration Requirements
- Acceptable documents include a valid registration card, pink slip, or a printed copy from the PennDOT vehicle registration website.
Two-Speed Idle Test
- Vehicle is operated at idle between 400-1250 RPM and at 2250-2750 RPM (typically 2500 RPM).
Composition of Gasoline
- Gasoline is made up of hydrogen and carbon atoms.
Harmful Vehicle Emissions
- Primary emissions include Carbon Monoxide (CO), Hydrocarbons (HC), and Nitrogen Oxides (NOx).
Emission Test Failure Procedure
- Provide the customer with a signed Vehicle Inspection Report (VIR) and repair data form if they fail the emission test.
Initial Emission Inspection Documentation
- Valid registration is the only paperwork required from the customer.
Recertification Frequency for Inspectors
- Emission inspectors must recertify every two years.
Visual Anti-Tampering Check Entries
- Acceptable entries are Pass, Fail, or Not Applicable (N/A).
5000 Miles Exemption
- No visual inspection or OBD-II test is required during this exemption.
Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL)
- Refers to the check engine light, service engine soon message, or ISO engine symbol.
ASM5015 Test Conditions
- A cooling fan is added when the temperature reaches 72°F or above.
PCV Valve Function
- Regulates crankcase gas buildup and pressure by controlling airflow into the intake.
Exhaust Probe Insertion
- The exhaust probe should be inserted 10 inches into the tailpipe.
Wavier Eligibility Criteria
- Customers must spend a minimum of $150.00 to be eligible for a wavier.
Flashing Check Engine Light Indication
- Indicates a severe misfire that could damage the catalyst.
Excluded Repairs for Wavier Qualification
- Warranty repairs, customer labor, emissions test costs, unrelated repairs, and replacing tampered or missing parts do not qualify toward a wavier.
Visual & Anti-Tampering Check Components
- Inspections cover the catalytic converter, gas cap/fuel inlet, air pump, EVAP system, EGR valve, and PCV valve.
Wavier Issuance
- Only certified emission repair technicians can issue a wavier.
Motorcycle Emission Inspections
- Motorcycles do not undergo emission inspections.
Air Injection Reaction System Purpose
- Injects small amounts of air into the exhaust to help control exhaust gases.
ASM5015 Test Results
- Acceptable outcomes are Pass, Fail, Invalid, or Aborted.
Free Retest Period
- Customers have 30 days to request a free retest at the same repair shop.
Gas Cap Testing Requirement
- All gas caps must be tested and must pass inspection.
TPMS Requirement
- Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) does not need to be checked during an emission test.
Northern Region Inspector Inspection Type
- Inspectors perform visual and gas cap inspections.
Diagnostic Gases
- Carbon Dioxide (CO2) and Oxygen (O2) are used for diagnostic purposes.
Wavier Documentation Requirements
- Required documents include the initial test VIR, retest VIR for failure, receipts for all repairs and parts, data repair sheet, and sticker insurance report.
Insurance Requirement for Emission Inspections
- Insurance is not required to perform an emission inspection.
Gas Cap Replacement Policy
- Technicians can offer customers the option to replace a failed gas cap without violating the test-as-received policy.
PVC and EGR Locations
- The PCV valve is located in the valve cover, and the EGR valve is in the intake manifold.
EGR Valve Control Mechanism
- The EGR valve is controlled both electronically and via vacuum.
