    Study Notes

    Driving

    • Vehicle "pings" every 2 minutes to track movement
    • Alerts are triggered if the vehicle exceeds the speed limit by 30mph for 2 consecutive pings, exceeds 90 mph, idles for over 4 hours, or operates outside of Franklin county
    • Vehicles must come to a complete stop for any of the following: law enforcement direction, red lights, stop signs, negative right-of-way, blind intersections, when unable to account for all lanes, intersection hazards, stopped school bus with flashing lights, and unguarded railroads

    Backing

    • The driver and backer must maintain voice and visual contact at all times
    • Stop immediately if the backer becomes invisible
    • Both the driver and backer must be on the same radio frequency
    • The driver must monitor the backer's radio transmissions

    Rescue Support Unit (RSU)

    • Personnel from Engine 5 and 19 or the Fire Administration Officer (FAO) will dispatch the closest RSU
    • The company requesting the RSU is responsible for replacing absorbent materials, obtainable from Station 4 or logistics

    Radio Procedures

    • Don't jump in on runs unless likely the first arriving resource type

    Fireground Communications

    • Fireground benchmarks must be communicated via radio:
      • Building description
      • Problem description
      • Name of incident commander and command mode
      • Location of accountability
      • Findings from the 360-degree assessment
      • Immediate life safety issues and hazards
      • Location of fire
      • Incident Action Plan (IAP) strategy
      • Additional resources needed

    On-Scene Radio Report

    • Initial radio report is in two parts:

      • The second report is the IAP
    • The first report includes:
      • Company designation
      • Building description
      • Problem description
      • Name of incident commander and command mode

      • FAO calls for a "radio restriction"

    Emergency Assistance

    • Emergency Banner: Hold for 1.5 seconds. The FAO will broadcast "check your display" once and then initiate a 10-3.
    • 10-57: The FAO will initiate the following:
      • Hostile environment: Retreat and await police securing the scene
      • Multiple responses to same hydrant: Contact FAO for police assistance

      • Hydrogen cyanide (HCN) low alarm: 4.7 ppm (structure marked with one diagonal line in a square)
        • Consider these actions during offensive operations:
          • Vent coordination with fire attack
          • Two means of egress maintained on each floor
          • Hazard identification communicated to all personnel
          • Minimal personnel used for fire control

    Structure Marking System

    • Vacant structures with severe structural compromise: Exterior operations only (with limited exceptions for civilian life safety). Marked with a square containing two diagonal lines crossing (X). Offensive operations are only allowed when a viable victim is visually seen or heard and immediate action could prevent loss of life.
    • Hazard symbols used with the marking system: -R/O - roof open -SM - Stairs/steps missing -F/E - Avoid fire escape -H/F - Holes in the floor
    • Unmarked structures should be approached with the same level of caution as marked structures

    Electrical Emergencies

    • Turn off electrical power before extinguishing a fire
    • Reclosers will reopen the circuit multiple times before staying off
    • Maintain 10 inches of clearance between aerial and ground ladders and overhead electrical wires
    • Use CO2 or dry chemical for small fires
    • Utilize a 30-degree fog pattern with at least 100 psi nozzle
    • In an emergency exit, jump from the vehicle with feet together and shuffle 30 feet away
