Study Notes
Treatment of Emergency Priorities
- In emergency situations, the most urgent condition is treated first.
Interference with Breathing
- Foreign objects in the mouth and throat (e.g. denture, food) are removed to clear the airway.
- Mouth-to-mouth breathing is started immediately.
- Ambulance attendants provide airway, Ambu bags, and Oxygen equipment.
Severe Bleeding
- Apply hard pressure over the wound using fingers.
- If proper treatment is delayed, a thick pad and firm bandages are applied over the wound.
- If bleeding occurs in a limb, raise the limb, but keep the head and trunk flat.
- Monitor the pulse below the bleeding wound.
Unconsciousness
- Place the patient in the left lateral position, with the face slightly downwards to allow secretions or vomit to flow out of the mouth.
- Keep the tongue forward in the mouth to prevent it from relaxing backwards into the pharynx.
- Use a pillow behind the patient to maintain this position, ensuring an open airway.
- Do not leave the airway unattended.
- Exercise care when lifting the patient, ensuring the head, body, and legs are lifted together and at the same level.
