Study Notes
Cartilage and Ossification
- Cartilage undergoes ossification during development to form the stapes of the middle ear.
- The ventral portion of the mandibular process contains Meckel’s cartilage, leading to the formation of the hyoid bone, specifically the greater horn and the upper part of the body.
- The mesenchyme of the maxillary process contributes to the formation of the pre-maxilla, maxilla, zygomatic bone, and part of the temporal bone.
- Incus and malleus develop from remnants of Meckel’s cartilage.
Derivatives of Pharyngeal Pouches
- 1st pouch gives rise to the external auditory meatus, tympanic membrane, tympanic antrum, and Eustachian tube.
- 2nd pouch forms the tonsillar fossa and epithelial covering of palatine tonsils.
- 3rd pouch develops into the inferior parathyroid glands and thymus gland.
- 4th pouch results in the superior parathyroid glands and parafollicular cells of the thyroid gland.
Cleft Palate and Related Conditions
- Robin Sequence is characterized by micrognathia (mandible underdevelopment), associated with cleft palate and glossoptosis (posterior tongue displacement).
- Clefts can arise from failure in fusion during developmental stages, particularly regarding the maxillary and mandibular processes.
- Cleft palate closure begins around the 9th week via fusion from the center of the palatine processes outwardly.
Development of Nasal and Oral Cavities
- On the 24th day of gestation, primary nasal cavities form, eventually allowing communication between nasal and oral cavities as the secondary palate develops.
- Maxillary and mandibular processes grow towards each other, eventually forming the oral cavity and separating it from the nasal cavity.
- The naso-lacrimal groove separates lateral nasal processes from maxillary processes, leading to formation of the naso-lacrimal duct.
Face and Nasal Structure Formation
- Face development occurs around the 4.5-week mark, resulting in five primordia by the end of week 6.
- Fusion of the nasobuccal groove helps form the medial nasal processes which develop into the intermaxillary segment or frontonasal prominence.
- Cheek structures are derived from mesenchyme of the 2nd branchial arch.
Key Developmental Timelines
- Mandibular development takes place between and around the 28-38 day gestation period.
- Nasal pits develop into lateral and medial nasal processes, creating the foundation for nose structure.
