Study Notes
Embryology
- Embryology is the study of early development in living organisms (animals and plants)
- Reproduction is vital for survival of species
- Organisms reproduce to make new individuals
Asexual Reproduction
- One parent organism produces new individuals
- Methods include splitting, budding, and fragmentation
- Splitting: Parent organism splits into two or more organisms (e.g., Paramecium)
- Budding: A bud develops on the parent organism and later breaks away, forming a new individual (e.g., Hydra)
- Fragmentation: Parent organism breaks into fragments that grow into new organisms (e.g., Yeast)
Sexual Reproduction
- Two parents are involved
- Fusion of male (sperm) and female (egg) gametes forms a zygote (fertilized egg)
- Zygote undergoes embryonic development, dividing into numerous cells that form the embryo's body
Gametogenesis
- The production of gametes (sperm and egg) by parents
- Involves reducing the number of chromosomes in the gametes (haploid)
- The body cells of the organism have diploid number of chromosomes
- The cells lining the testis & ovaries in males and females are diploid
Spermatogenesis
- Production of sperm
- Occurs in the testes
- Includes three stages:
- Multiplication: Primordial germ cells divide via mitosis
- Growth: Spermatogonia grow to become primary spermatocytes
- Maturation: Primary spermatocytes divide via meiosis to form spermatids, which mature into spermatozoa
- Spermatozoa are formed by metamorphosis
Spermatozoon Structure
- The diagram shows a spermatozoon's structure, including the head, midpiece, principal piece, and tail
Types of Spermatozoa
- Different shapes & forms are observed for types of spermatozoa, as found in animals
Oogenesis
- The production of ova
- Occurs in the ovaries
- Includes three phases:
- Multiplication: Primordial germ cells divide via mitosis
- Growth: Germ cells grow into primary oocytes
- Maturation: Primary oocytes undergo meiosis to produce mature ova (eggs)
Structure of Testis
- The testis is composed of seminiferous tubules
- Lined with germinal epithelium
- Cells originating in the germinal epithelium produce sperm
Structure of Ovary
- The ovary is lined with germinal epithelium which includes primordial germ cells
- Primordial germ cells undergo oogenesis to form mature eggs
