Elevator Rescue Guidelines
- Purpose: To establish guidelines for removing trapped occupants from a malfunctioning elevator car that has stopped and will not operate between floors.
Pre-Elevator Rescue Preparations
- Bring necessary tools:
- Elevator hoist way door key
- Forcible Entry Bag
- Pike pole
- Attic ladder
- Lockout / Tag-out kit
- Flashlight
Elevator Rescue Procedure
- Locate elevator bank on main floor
- Determine location of inoperative car:
- Use position indicator if operative
- Perform visual inspection by opening main floor door with elevator key
- Possible ways to lower elevator:
- Open Chicago key box, use key to activate “Fire Service Option”
- Locate elevator main disconnect, place in "off" position, wait 15 seconds, reset to "on" position, and push call button
- If above fails, lockout / tag-out elevator main disconnect
Removing Trapped Occupants from Elevator
Position No. 1
- Lockout / Tag-out elevator main disconnect
- Open first keyed elevator floor door above floor of inoperative car using hoist way door key
- Open successive doors from inside shaft by progressing up or down floors using pike pole
- Upon opening floor door that exposes inoperative car door mechanism:
- Block floor door open
- Turn door opening device to open car door with palm of hand
- Use attic ladder to remove occupants of car through door opening
- If occupants cannot be removed through door opening, open escape hatch on top of car, place attic ladder into car, and remove occupants
Position No. 2
- Lockout / Tag-out elevator main disconnect
- Open first keyed elevator floor door above inoperative car (may use "leap frog" method)
- Upon opening floor door that exposes inoperative car roof:
- Block floor door open
- Turn door opening device on top of car to open car door with palm of hand
- Have occupants push door roller (release mechanism) and open door
- With two firefighters, help occupants out of car, being careful as the shaft is open
- Upon removing occupants, close doors and leave all electrical switches in "off" position
- Contact building maintenance or leave note for elevator repairman as to what switches have been turned off.
