Study Notes
Elevator Rescues
- Elevator rescues can be divided into two categories: Non-Emergency and True-Emergency
- Non-Emergency: stopped/stalled elevator cars with no immediate danger to passengers, require reassurance and low/no risk techniques, and elevator mechanic assistance
- True-Emergency: stopped/stalled elevator cars with passengers who have a true emergency (e.g., medical problems, fires, hazardous materials, terrorism), require specialized tools and equipment, and Rescue Task Force assistance
Non-Emergency Elevator Rescue
- Activate fire service feature Phase I in the bank of elevators to override the problem with the elevator’s automatic operation and bring the elevator down to the designated level
- If all elevators return to the designated level except one, identify the elevator with the victims
- Wait for an elevator mechanic to assist
True Emergency Elevator Rescue
- Two types of elevators: Traction (cabled) and Hydraulic
- Rescue procedure is the same for both types, with an additional option for Hydraulic elevators (manual lowering)
- Rescue steps:
- Remove power at the disconnect (Lock out/Tag out)
- Make verbal contact with passengers, assure them they are OK, and determine if there are any medical emergencies
- Determine the type of rescue to be performed (car top emergency exit, through door opening, "leap frogging" or "polling", or manual lowering)
Elevator Rescue Procedures
Car Top Emergency Exit
- Open hall door with hoistway access key, prop open
- Open car top exit to gain access to inside of the car
- Remove trapped passengers via ladder lowered into the car
Through Door Opening
- Open hall door with hoistway access key, prop open
- Open car doors by pulling car door clutch or rolling door operator pulleys
- Be aware of door restrictors and door operators
Leap Frogging (Polling)
- Necessary when there is limited hoistway access
- Rescue steps involve accessing the elevator from the top and bottom floors, using an elevator pole or fire department pike pole to unlock hall doors
Manual Lowering (Hydraulic Only)
- Safest way to rescue passengers from a hydraulic elevator
- Steps:
- Advise passengers to stay clear of car doors
- Make sure car doors are completely closed
- Open manual lowering valve until oil stops draining back into tank
- Close valve
- Open hall doors with hoistway access key
- Push open car doors by grabbing car door clutch
- Allow passengers to step up and out of car
Important Notes
- Door restrictors: mechanical or electromechanical devices that prevent the opening of car doors between floors
- Door operators: can roll open by pulling on clutch, sometimes straight armed with doors in closed position, and arm must be unlocked
