Elements of Interior Design
- Interior Design Objective 2.02 covers the fundamental design elements.
- These elements include: line, form/shape, space, texture, pattern, and color.
Line
- Line is the most basic element of design.
- Examples include the British flag, the Nike logo, and a radiation hazard symbol.
- Horizontal lines suggest relaxation, calmness, and restfulness. They are associated with sunsets, ocean waves and the position you sleep in. Think about how they are used in rooms in your house.
- Vertical lines suggest height, strength, dignity, and stability. Think about vertical lines in rooms in a house.
Diagonal Lines
- Diagonal lines represent different levels of energy, and are related to the degree and number of angles.
- Think about diagonal lines in terms of energy and the use of angle.
Curved Lines
- Curved lines appear softer and suggest feelings of organization, eternity, uniformity (when circular), and naturalness.
- Curved lines communicate freedom and openness, and are found in nature, such as plants, stones and wood.
Shape & Form
- Shape is the outline of something.
- Form is the three-dimensional physical shape of an object.
- Forms relate to volume, mass, height, width, and depth.
Form - 4 Types
- Realistic: depictions that are lifelike, traditional, and familiar
- Abstract: changes or rearranges elements of a recognizable object into something recognizable but slightly changed; gives a contemporary, creative and artistic vibe.
- Geometric: using shapes like squares, rectangles, and circles to create forms; creates organization, order, planning and a tailored aesthetic.
- Free form: found in nature; random and free-flowing; creates a sense of freedom, untraditional, and different from realistic shapes.
Space
- Space is the area surrounding a form.
- Space is bounded by walls.
- Large and small spaces have different pros and cons in terms of design.
Texture
- Texture: the feel or appearance of a surface.
- Two kinds of texture:
- Tactile: the actual feel of a surface.
- Visual: the illusion of how a surface will feel.
Color
- Color is an element of design that has already been discussed in previous objectives.
Pattern
- Pattern is the repetition of a design in an orderly manner.
- Patterns can be geometric, naturalistic, or abstract.
