Electrostatics is a branch of physics that deals with the study of slow-moving or stationary electric charges, which are the property of objects that give rise to observed forces. Electric forces are described by Coulomb's Law, which states that the magnitude of the electrostatic force of attraction or repulsion between two point charges is directly proportional to the product of their charges and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them. These forces are either attractive or repulsive, depending on the signs of the charges involved.
The concept of charge arises from the observation of forces between objects. Electric charge is a property of objects that gives rise to this observed force. There are two types of electric charges: positive and negative. Unlike charges attract, while like charges repel.
