Electronic Components

Resistors

  • A passive component that reduces voltage or current
  • Measured in ohms (Ω)
  • Types:
    • Fixed resistors: have a fixed resistance value
    • Variable resistors: can change resistance value
  • Characteristics:
    • Resistance (R): opposition to current flow
    • Power rating: maximum power that can be dissipated
    • Tolerance: percentage of deviation from nominal value

Diodes

  • A semiconductor component that allows current to flow in one direction
  • Types:
    • Rectifier diodes: convert AC to DC
    • Zener diodes: regulate voltage
    • LED (Light Emitting Diode): emits light when forward-biased
  • Characteristics:
    • Forward bias: allowing current to flow
    • Reverse bias: blocking current flow
    • Breakdown voltage: maximum voltage before diode breaks down

Transistors

  • A semiconductor component that amplifies or switches electronic signals
  • Types:
    • Bipolar Junction Transistors (BJTs): use both positive and negative charge carriers
    • Field-Effect Transistors (FETs): use voltage to control current
  • Characteristics:
    • Amplification: increasing signal strength
    • Switching: turning on or off
    • Current gain: ratio of output to input current
