Study Notes

Electron Transport Chain

  • The electron transport chain takes place in the mitochondrial inner membrane.
  • The function of the electron transport chain is to generate energy for the cell by pumping protons outside the inner mitochondrial membrane.

Complex I

  • NADH carries 2 electrons to Complex I.
  • When NADH releases 2 electrons to Complex I, 4 protons are pumped outside the membrane.

Complex II

  • FADH2 carries 2 electrons to Complex II.
  • When FADH2 releases 2 electrons to Complex II, 2 protons are pumped outside the membrane.

Complex III

  • Electrons from Complex II are transported to Complex III by the molecule CoQ (Coenzyme Q).
  • When the electrons arrive at Complex III, 4 protons are pumped outside the membrane.

Complex IV

  • Electrons from Complex III are transported to Complex IV by the molecule Cytochrome c.
  • When electrons arrive at Complex IV, 2 protons are pumped outside the membrane, and water is formed.
