Ammeters
- An ammeter is a measuring device that measures the flow of current in a circuit, giving an exact reading of how much current passes through the conductor.
- Ammeters are commonly used to measure the current drawn by any appliance, machine, motors, pumps, equipment, etc.
- There are two types of ammeters: digital and analog.
Digital Ammeters
- Digital ammeters measure current flow in amps and display current levels on a digital display.
- They help users troubleshoot erratic loads and trends.
Analog Ammeters
- Analog ammeters operate on the principle of electromagnet induction, causing a torque or rotational force that deflects a pointer attached to a coil, indicating the magnitude of the current flowing through the ammeter.
Multimeters
- A multimeter is an electronic instrument used to measure the three basic electrical characteristics of voltage, current, and resistance.
- It can also be used to test continuity between two points in an electrical circuit.
Operating a Multimeter
- The instrument includes two leads or probes (red and black) and three ports.
- The black lead is plugged into the common port, while the red lead is plugged into other ports based on the requirement.
- To obtain a reading, touch the end of each probe to the end of the terminals of components, being cautious not to touch the metal ends when activated.
Types of Multimeters
- Analog Multimeter: uses a moving coil meter and a pointer to indicate the reading on the scale.
- Digital Multimeter: performs all functions from AC to DC, has two probes (positive and negative), and is widely used.
Electrical Measuring Instruments
- An electrical measuring instrument is a device used to measure the electric current's magnitude for various purposes.
- Typically, current, voltage, resistance, and power are the values measured with this apparatus.
Electrical Components
- A component that produces, transforms, transmits, or alters electrical energy is called an electrical component.
- Electrical components influence the flow of electrical current, store energy, amplify signals, and carry out various specialized functions.
Difference Between Electrical Measuring Instruments and Components
- Electrical measuring instruments assess and quantify the electrical behavior or properties of a circuit or component, providing valuable information for analysis, troubleshooting, and maintenance.
- Electrical components are essential to the circuit's functionality, unlike measuring equipment, and are not used for measurement.
