Electrical Engineering Orientation - Unit 4: Tracks and Specializations
- Electrical engineering is a branch specializing in electricity's production, generation, transmission, and use.
- Electrical engineers design, develop, plan, test, and supervise electrical systems. This includes wiring installations and commissioning of lightings, motors, and other electrical equipment in various settings (buildings, automobiles, watercrafts).
- Electrical engineers are involved in research, design, development, manufacturing, and management of complex hardware and software systems reflecting technological advances.
- Sub-disciplines include computer engineering, software engineering, electronics engineering, optical engineering, power engineering, control engineering, and telecommunication engineering.
- Electricity is the general term for the presence and flow of electric charge.
- Electronics is a specialized branch of electrical engineering focusing on electronic devices and circuits' behaviour and applications.
- The course covers different specializations within electrical engineering.
Classifications of Electrical Engineering
- Communication System: Designs, develops, and maintains technology for communications (telephones to internet systems).
- Computer System: Develops, tests, and evaluates software and personal computers using engineering, computer science, and mathematical analysis.
- Control System: Understands and manages processes using automation devices; implements the process into operation.
- Power System: Manages the generation, transmission, distribution, uses, and maintenance of electrical power, including generators, motors, and transformers.
- Signal Processing System: Analyzes, designs, and manipulates necessary devices to process analog and digital signals.
Tracks and Specializations
- Power System Protection: Addresses protection of generators, transformers, busbars, and lines, integrating protective relaying and surge protection in power systems.
- Advanced Power System Analysis and Design: Focuses on transmission and distribution, power substations, and industrial/commercial power systems.
- Advanced Electrical Systems Design: Designs high-rise buildings, substations, high-voltage underground cables (AC/DC systems).
- Entrepreneurship: Covers project management, acceptance, testing, and documentation of projects related to electrical engineering, including sales and marketing management.
- Machine Automation and Process Control: Deals with pneumatics, process control, electro-pneumatics, and PLC's (Programmable Logic Controllers) in manufacturing.
