Auto Electrical
- A cell converts mechanical energy to electrical energy.
- A battery gives DC voltage.
- Electrolyte is a mixture of H2SO4 and H2O.
- The positive terminal of a lead acid cell is PbO2.
- A dry cell is a primary cell.
- A lead acid cell is a secondary cell.
Primary and Secondary Cells
- A primary acid cell is a non-rechargeable cell.
- A secondary acid cell is a rechargeable cell.
Battery Characteristics
- The unit of battery capacity is ampere-hour.
- Distilled water should be used in a battery.
- When removing connections from a battery, the negative terminal should be removed first, followed by the positive terminal.
- A fully discharged battery's plates do not cover with lead sulfate (PbSO4).
- The ampere-hour capacity of a battery is not directly proportional to the number of plates and size of plates.
- A battery's life can be shortened by long idle periods in a discharged condition.
- When a cell's specific gravity is down to about 1.150, the cell is completely discharged.
Alternator
- An alternator converts mechanical energy to electrical energy.
- An alternator initially generates AC voltage.
Inductor
- An iron core inductor has a coil wound on a ferromagnetic core.
- Inductive reactance (XL) is calculated by XL = 2Ï€fL.
- A transformer transfers AC power from one circuit to another circuit.
- When a coil is short-circuited, an ohm meter reads zero resistance.
- A choke with 10H inductance at 100HZ AC has a reactance of 628 Ω.
Inductor Properties
- The voltage across an ideal coil leads the current through it by 90°.
- Inductor is used in filter circuits and relays.
- Alternator works on self-induction.
- Inductance of a coil is directly proportional to the number of turns of the coil.
- Inductance of a coil is not inversely proportional to the length of the coil.
