Study Notes
Auto Electrical
- A cell converts mechanical energy to electrical energy.
- A battery gives DC voltage.
- Electrolyte is a mixture of H2SO4 and H2O.
- The positive terminal of a lead acid cell is PbO2.
- A dry cell is a primary cell.
- A lead acid cell is a secondary cell.
Primary and Secondary Cells
- A primary acid cell is a non-rechargeable cell.
- A secondary acid cell is a rechargeable cell.
Battery Characteristics
- The unit of battery capacity is ampere-hour.
- Distilled water should be used in a battery.
- When removing connections from a battery, the negative terminal should be removed first, followed by the positive terminal.
- A fully discharged battery's plates do not cover with lead sulfate (PbSO4).
- The ampere-hour capacity of a battery is not directly proportional to the number of plates and size of plates.
- A battery's life can be shortened by long idle periods in a discharged condition.
- When a cell's specific gravity is down to about 1.150, the cell is completely discharged.
Alternator
- An alternator converts mechanical energy to electrical energy.
- An alternator initially generates AC voltage.
Inductor
- An iron core inductor has a coil wound on a ferromagnetic core.
- Inductive reactance (XL) is calculated by XL = 2πfL.
- A transformer transfers AC power from one circuit to another circuit.
- When a coil is short-circuited, an ohm meter reads zero resistance.
- A choke with 10H inductance at 100HZ AC has a reactance of 628 Ω.
Inductor Properties
- The voltage across an ideal coil leads the current through it by 90°.
- Inductor is used in filter circuits and relays.
- Alternator works on self-induction.
- Inductance of a coil is directly proportional to the number of turns of the coil.
- Inductance of a coil is not inversely proportional to the length of the coil.
- Inductance is the property of an inductor that opposes the change of current flowing through it.
CSM Engine Circuit
- A lube oil pressure switch in a CSM engine circuit is of the NO type.
- A bypass switch in a new Duomatic engine circuit is of the NO type.
- In a CSM machine, the engine will stop if the temperature is at 950°C or above.
- The function of a time delay circuit in a new Duomatic engine circuit is to separate the programmer battery and working light during starting.
- The mechanical recorder is directly connected to the battery in a CSM engine circuit.
- There are 7 stopper switches provided in a CSM engine circuit.
- Hold relay is used in a latch type engine circuit.
Gear Box
- Gear box is controlled by a hydraulic system.
- There are 4 solenoids for clutch operation in a Z.F. gear box.
- The M3 solenoid is common for forward direction in all gears.
- If the brake pressure is 3 or more, the Z.F. gear box will neutral.
- The M2 and M4 solenoids are energized when the 2nd gear is selected in the reverse direction.
- The 5b26 and 11b26 switches in a Z.F. circuit are limit switches.
- In a working position, the green LED will glow on the B19 panel in a CSM machine.
Solenoids
- The function of a lock-up solenoid is to operate the converter clutch.
- The RPM sensing transducer is fitted on the turbine in a Z.F. gear box.
- Solenoids are fitted in the shifter assembly of a Z.F. gear box.
- The Z.F. pressure fault indicator shows a red indication at less than 12.
