Study Notes
What is Research?
- Research is a systematic investigation to gain new knowledge from existing facts, aiming to provide efficient solutions to routine problems.
- It involves a search for truth, defining and redefining problems, formulating hypotheses, collecting and evaluating data, making deductions, and reaching conclusions.
Objectives of Research
- Propose and test hypotheses that provide causal relationships between variables.
- Discover and establish relationships, associations, and independence between aspects of a situation or phenomenon.
- Understand different phenomena and develop new perceptions.
- Study and describe accurately the characteristics of situations, problems, phenomena, services, groups, or individuals.
- Explain unexplored horizons of knowledge.
- Test reported findings and conclusions on new data and novel conclusions on previously reported data.
Types of Research
Applied Research
- Tries to solve an immediate specific problem faced by industry or society.
- Obtained solutions can be deployed to solve the problem.
- Duration of applied research is shorter as a quick solution is expected.
Descriptive Research
- Generally used in business analysis or social problems.
- Does not have control over parameters or variables.
- Tries to represent or analyze previous and/or current facts.
- Examples include analysis of customer purchase patterns, study of travel mode used by people, and study of socioeconomic characteristics of residents.
Analytical Research
- Uses existing information to explain a complex phenomenon or perform a critical evaluation.
- Identified hypothesis can be accepted or rejected depending on the analysis.
- Examples include historical study, forensic work, food, and medical research.
Correlational Research
- Explores the relationship or association between incidences, variables, and so on.
- Examples include studying the effect of modern lifestyle on obesity and analysis of the impact of technology on employment.
Qualitative Research
- Deals with the quality or types of parameters considered for the research.
- Assumes that the world is unstable and differences in parameters may occur with time.
- Example includes research related to human behavior.
Quantitative Research
- Involves measurements of quantities of characteristics that can be used as features for the research study.
- Assumes that the world is stable and uses statistical analysis on parameter values for conclusions.
- Examples include finding the number of individuals taking benefits of different government policies and conducting a survey with a random question.
Experimental Research
- Focuses on fieldwork and experiments that can control the independent variable.
- Examples include studying the effect of a new drug on a specific group of people or animals and analyzing the performance of algorithms on various datasets.
Explanatory Research
- Tries to analyze and justify the reason behind the occurrence of a particular phenomenon or association between variables.
- Aims to explain why a relationship, association, or interdependence exists.
Literature Survey
- A comprehensive study of technical and authorized content related to research keywords.
- Helps the researcher to understand the approaches, methodologies, algorithms, and datasets used by other scientists.
- Identifies where the gap is and where the researcher can contribute to an existing knowledge base.
