The Listening Process
- The listening process involves 5 stages:
- Receiving - Focus on hearing the speakers message; isolating the message and avoiding confusing stimuli.
- Understanding - Attempt to learn the meaning of the message, especially when the speaker does not enunciate clearly.
- Remembering - Begins with listening effectively. Wolvin and Coakley note that the most common reason for not remembering a message is because it was not learned in the first place.
- Evaluating - Judging the value of the message. Listener evaluations can vary as everyone embodies biases and perspectives. Opinions will influence how the message is evaluated.
- Responding - Giving feedback and indicating involvement, and can be interpreted as feedback.
Types of Listening
- Appreciative Listening
- Listens for enjoyment, for example, listening to music because it is enjoyable.
- Empathic Listening
- Listens to show concern, and to understand the speaker by understanding the situation.
- Comprehensive Listening
- Listens to understand or comprehend the message being sent, for example, watching the news, or listening to a lecture. Actively identifies the structure of the speech and evaluates the supports as evidence.
- Critical Listening
- Listens to evaluate the content of the message, which involves thinking critically, making mental judgements, and evaluating if the information is valid.
Active Listening
- Active listening is a skill that can be acquired with practice. It requires concentration, and is about focusing on what is being said.
- It involves listening with all ones senses and showing verbal and non-verbal signs.
- Interest is conveyed through eye contact, nodding, smiling and agreeing.
