Study Notes
High Quality Assessment
- Assessment should use sampling techniques to keep the assessment process manageable, especially for large groups.
- Assessment should produce accurate data reflecting what educators are looking to test.
- Assessment practice should be ethical.
Principles of Effective Assessment
- Assessment must align with the curriculum and relate directly to the content and performance standards and competencies.
- Assessment should focus on tracking learners’ progress in relation to content and performance standards in the curriculum, along with development of twenty-first-century skills.
- Assessment must be valid, ensuring that the assessment activities and criteria accurately measure the extent to which learners develop the required competencies and meet the standards.
- Assessment must be reliable and consistent, requiring clear and consistent processes in developing assessment activities.
- Assessment must be fair and inclusive, considering learners’ race, gender, learning needs, learning style, language of learning, abilities/disabilities, cultural background, and socioeconomic status.
- Assessment should never exclude, take advantage of, or disadvantage any individual or group of learners.
Cognitive Levels of Assessment
- Analysis: Involves breaking down a concept or idea into its constituent parts
- Examples: distinguishing sub-processes involved in a power supply’s operation; identifying and illustrating the components of an operating system.
- Verbs: analyze, compare, contrast, differentiate, distinguish, identify, illustrate, interpret.
- Synthesis: Requires students to put together various components to create a new whole.
- Examples: classifying nail care implements according to their use; designing a new product based on existing features.
- Verbs: combine, construct, create, design, develop, formulate, generate, integrate, modify.
- Traditional Assessment
- Often focuses on lower levels of cognition such as memorization and recall.
Authentic Assessment
- Focuses on analytical and creative thinking skills, collaborative work, and reflects student learning, achievement, and attitude.
- Measures performances or products with realistic meaning attributable to the school’s success.
- Involves “real-world” activities, questions, and problems.
- There are three broad categories of authenticity:
- Context of the Assessment: Realistic activities, performance-based tasks, cognitively complex tasks.
- Role of Students: Defense of the product, formative assessment, collaboration with teachers and peers.
- Scoring: Known or student-developed criteria, multiple indicators or portfolios for scoring, mastery as performance expectation.
Characteristics of Authentic Assessment
- Four Basic Characteristics: Task representative of performance in the field, teaching and learning assessment criteria, self-assessment playing a significant role, public presentation and defense of work.
- Best Uses: Direct measures, capture constructive nature of learning, integrate teaching, learning, and assessment, provide multiple paths to demonstration.
Traditional vs. Authentic Assessment
- Attribute: Traditional assessment primarily involves selecting a response to a contrived activity, while authentic assessment focuses on performing a task in a real-world setting.
- Cognitive Levels: Traditional assessment evaluates knowledge and comprehension, while authentic assessment assesses application, analysis, and synthesis.
- Development of Solution: Traditional assessment is teacher-structured, while authentic assessment encourages student-structured solutions.
- Objectivity of Scoring: Traditional assessment makes scoring relatively easy to achieve, whereas authentic assessment presents greater difficulty in scoring objectively.
- Evidence of Mastery: Traditional assessment provides indirect evidence of mastery, while authentic assessment offers direct evidence.
Formative vs. Summative Evaluation
- Formative Assessment: Conducted during instruction, provides ongoing feedback and adjustment to instruction, encourages student involvement, focuses on intrinsic motivation and mastery-oriented learning, aims to provide immediate and specific feedback and instructional correctives, emphasizes understanding, application, and reasoning, and utilizes flexible and adaptable techniques.
- Summative Assessment: Conducted after instruction, documents student learning at the end of an instructional segment, discourages student involvement, emphasizes extrinsic motivation and performance-oriented learning, measures achievement and assigns grades, focuses on knowledge and comprehension, emphasizes general and group-oriented levels of specificity, and employs rigid and structured techniques.
