Study Notes
- The provided text contains sample questions for the EDGE Experts Exam and their answer keys, designed to clarify the types of questions and their format.
General Information on EDGE
- EDGE is a green building standard, a software application, and a certification program.
- EDGE provides projected operational savings, projected incremental costs and projected carbon emission reductions.
- EDGE does not provide projected baseline construction costs.
- EN ISO 13790 standard is used to calculate the heating and cooling demand in EDGE.
- EDGE calculates energy use on an annual basis.
The EDGE Standard – Building Types & Efficiency Measures
- Eye Hospital is not a building type in EDGE.
- Serviced apartments, light industry, and metro stations are building types in EDGE.
- For a development including 20,000m² of apartments above 3,000m² of shopping area, the Homes and Retail typology should be used for modeling.
- Where a 10,000m² building includes an 8,000m² shopping mall, 1,500m² of hotel rooms and a 500m² office space Hospitality and Retail typology should be used for modeling.
- Space cooling is likely the most significant end-use to achieve energy savings in a hospital located in a hot and humid climate.
- Replacing an air-filled cavity with polystyrene insulation would reduce monthly utility costs.
- A roof composed of a concrete slab (R-value of 1 m²·K/W), insulation (R-value of 3 m²·K/W), and a rubberized layer (R-value of 1 m²·K/W) assembles to a U-value of 0.2 W/m²·K.
- A 20 cm thick brick with a k-value of 0.5 W/m·K has an R-value of 0.4 m²·K/W.
- Installing low-E glass in a building will impact heating energy use.
Local Market Conditions – Elements of the Base Case & Base Case vs. Improved Case
- The EDGE Assessment Base Case building is based on local current practice and compliance with national/local building regulations.
- The Cooling System assignment of the EDGE Base Case is based on ASHRAE 90.1-2007.
- A measure marked with an asterisk (*) in the EDGE App means relevant values must be input regardless of whether an improvement has been made.
- A building contains two cooling systems with the same capacity but with COP values of 3 and 5 respectively, so the COP value entered in the EDGE App should be 4.
EDGE App
- The EDGE Software is available free of charge to anyone after registering on the EDGE App.
Roles and Responsibilities of EDGE Project Members
- An EDGE Auditor does not register the project on the EDGE App; rather, design and construction teams prepare supporting documents, an EDGE Expert advises on green design and an EDGE Certifier trains Auditors.
- To become an EDGE Auditor, a candidate must become an EDGE Expert, train with local or global Certifiers, and maintain their credentials.
- The developer pays the fees for the Auditor of a project applying for EDGE certification.
- The Certifier assigns an Auditor for the project.
- An EDGE Auditor must confirm a project's floor area, and space heating fuel.
EDGE Certification Process
- The project team must contact the Auditor to request an alternate solution if a project team does not have the required measure compliance documents specified in the EDGE User Guide,.
- The earliest a project can be registered is when the project is in the concept phase.
- An EDGE Certificate is issued to the Client when the EDGE Certifier is satisfied that the audited Construction stage assessment is correct.
