Study Notes
- Objectives: To learn about different kinds of ecosystems and describe different habitats.
Ecosystems
- The Arizona Desert is one of many different ecosystems on Earth.
- Mangrove forests, sea ice in the Arctic Ocean, and rice paddies are other examples of ecosystems.
Mangrove Forests
- Mangroves are trees able to grow with their roots in seawater.
- Mangrove forests form along the coasts of many tropical countries.
- Young fish find safety from larger fish among the mangrove roots.
- Mudskippers feed on the mud when the tide is out.
- Crab-eating macaques climb through the trees to catch crabs on the tree roots and mud.
- Bacteria decompose mangrove leaves that fall onto the mud.
- Prawns and crabs consume the partly decomposed leaves.
Sea Ice in the Arctic Ocean
- During the Arctic winter, some of the seawater freezes due to the cold.
- Seals hunt for fish in the water but must surface to breathe.
- Polar bears patrol the ice, hunting seals; they are good swimmers and can move between ice floes.
- Arctic foxes also search for food on the ice.
- Tiny algae (single-celled plants) grow on the underside of the ice floes because light passes through the ice
- Tiny shrimp-like organisms consume the algae, and fish consume the shrimp-like organisms.
Rice Paddy
- Rice paddies in Malaysia are farmed by people; this is not a natural ecosystem.
- Paddy fields are flooded with water at certain times of the year.
- Algae grow in the shallow water and on the mud at the sides of the flooded areas.
- Fish swim into the flooded paddies from the irrigation canals.
- Frogs and dragonflies breed in the water. Due to the shallow water, the water heats up quickly during the day, and cools down quickly at night.
- Farmers often add fertiliser to the paddy fields, which helps not only the rice but also the algae to grow faster, thus providing more food for the animals.
- Many birds feed in and around the paddy fields.
- Forests, grasslands, deserts, wetlands, aquatic habitats, mountains, and caves, are also ecosystems.
Habitats in an ecosystem
- Examples given include topical rainforests, temperate forests, boreal forests, marshes, swamps and bogs
- Aquatic habitats may be further divided into freshwater (rivers, lakes, ponds) and saltwater (marine - oceans, seas, coral reefs) .
Adaptation
- Adaptation is something that changes to become suitable to a new or special situation.
- A stick insect is thin and brown, which helps it blend in and hide from bigger animals.
