Spelling Tussenletters

Spelling is an essential part of written communication, especially when it comes to Dutch. In this context, the term 'tussenletter' refers to letters used between two consonants within a word. These extra letters can change how a word sounds, so they must always be spelled correctly according to standard spelling rules. Here we will discuss some common issues with tussenletters and ways to avoid them while writing in Dutch.

One issue with tussenletters occurs because certain consonant clusters do not have corresponding vowel combinations. For instance, there are many nouns ending in -sch followed by another letter, such as schilderijen ('paintings') and schrikken ('scary things'). However, the rule of thumb is that if you see one specific letter after an -sch cluster, you can omit the umlaut. So in these cases, you would simply spell these words as 'schildrijnen' and 'shrieken'.

Another common mistake people make involves adding unnecessary letters before a pause. This happens most commonly with verbs like hebben ('to have'), kennen ('to know'), zien ('to see'), denken ('to think'), et cetera. These tend to end in -n which means that sometimes people mistakenly connect them through a period instead of leaving out the last letter. Instead of writing 'ik ben hier', you would only need to write 'ben hier'.

Similarly, prepositions often cause trouble due to their irregularity. Some examples include binnen, bij, buiten, en over. Binnen en buiten usually take a verb in its base form, whereas bij needs to have its participle conjugated accordingly. Over is tricky since its meaning changes depending on placement within your sentence; generally speaking though, over follows all kinds of predicatives without changing its spelling whatsoever.

While spelling tussenletters can seem daunting, understanding basic rules and practicing can help solidify proper usage. By knowing which letters go where and why, any writer in Dutch can produce more accurate work while avoiding mistakes involving tussenletters.
