Study Notes
Dura Mater
- A hard, thick, tough, and inelastic layer with two layers: periosteal and meningeal
- Periosteal layer attaches to the inner surface of the skull
- Meningeal layer attaches to the arachnoid on one side and the periosteal layer on the other
Dural Extensions
- Three main extensions: falx cerebri, tentorium cerebelli, and falx cerebelli
- Falx cerebri: a sickle-shaped extension between the two cerebral hemispheres
- Tentorium cerebelli: a tent-like extension covering the cerebellum
- Falx cerebelli: an extension sitting between the two cerebellar hemispheres
- The midbrain passes through the tentorial notch (opening in the tentorium cerebelli)
Filum Terminale External
- An extension of dura mater that attaches the spinal cord to the coccyx bone for cord stability
Sinuses in Dural Extensions
- Superior sagittal sinus: lies in the attached edge of the falx cerebri
- Inferior sagittal sinus: lies in the free edge of the falx cerebri
- Straight sinus: lies in the junction between the falx cerebri and tentorium cerebelli
- Transverse sinus: lies in the attached edge of the tentorium cerebelli
- Occipital sinus: lies in the falx cerebelli
Dural Reflections and Compartments
- Dural reflections create 'compartments' within the brain
- Supratentorial compartment: above the tentorium cerebelli
- Infratentorial compartment: below the tentorium cerebelli
