Study Notes
Potency and Efficacy
- Potency measures the amount of drug required to produce a specific effect
- Efficacy measures the maximum response or effect a drug can produce
- Potency is commonly determined by the dose required to produce a specific effect, often represented by EC50 (Effective Concentration 50%), which is the concentration of a drug that produces 50% of its maximum effect
- A drug with higher efficacy is more therapeutically beneficial as it produces a greater maximum response
Drug Safety
- The six rights of drug safety are: right patient, right drug, right dose, right route, right time, and right documentation
- When handling medications, the label should be read at least three times: when taking the medication from the shelf, when preparing the medication for administration, and when administering the medication to the patient
- If a drug has unusual characteristics, such as unusual color, odor, or texture, it should not be administered and the pharmacist or supplier should be contacted
- If unsure about a physician's order for medication, the nurse should clarify the order with the physician before administering the medication
