Study Notes
Drug-Induced Hyperpigmentation
- Oral post-inflammatory pigmentation (OPP) is a discoloration of the oral mucosa caused by an excess of melanin production and deposition within the basal layer of the epithelium.
Pigmentation
- Pigmentation is defined as the process of deposition of pigments in oral tissue.
- Types of pigments that may cause hyperpigmentation include:
- Melanin
Melanocytes
- Melanocytes are responsible for melanin production.
Etiology
- The lesion is thought to represent an increase in melanin production in the basal cell layer of the epithelium stimulated by tobacco.
Physiological Pigmentation
- Racial pigmentation: melanin is present in the basal cell layer of epithelium in people of African descent (basilar melanosis).
- Pregnancy-related pigmentation: blotchy pigmentation on the face, nipples (melasma).
