Study Notes
SIPDE Process Overview
- SIPDE stands for Search, Identify, Predict, Decide, Execute, forming a systematic approach for safe driving.
Search
- Search the roadway and off-road areas 20-30 seconds ahead.
- At city speeds (30 mph), search 1.5 to 2 blocks ahead; at highway speeds (55 mph), look 1/3 to 1/2 mile ahead.
- Consider visibility, time, space, and potential crash risks during search.
Identify
- Identify specific objects or conditions within 12-15 seconds ahead that can interfere with your planned path.
- Recognize hazards that may require attention to avoid collisions.
Predict
- Anticipate the likelihood of a crash by evaluating possible actions or changes in conditions.
- Understand that predicting helps assess risk levels on or near the roadway.
Decide
- Make decisions on the best actions to take to avoid collisions, at least 4-5 seconds in advance.
- Strategies include adjusting speed, changing lanes, or preparing to stop.
Execute
- Implement decisions through driving maneuvers such as steering, braking, accelerating, signaling, and using the horn.
- Routine execution is necessary to avoid accidents effectively.
SMITH Process
- Aim high in steering: Focus on the road ahead rather than directly at the hood to maintain better situational awareness.
Key Principles of the SMITH Process
- Keep your eyes moving to adapt to constant changes in the driving environment.
- Get the big picture: Be aware of the overall traffic situation, including all vehicles and pedestrians.
- Ensure visibility: Make actions clear to other drivers for safety during maneuvers.
- Maintain a margin of safety by leaving an escape route in case of sudden hazards.
Application of SIPDE in Driving
- Integrate the SIPDE steps into everyday driving to become automatic in recognizing threats and planning safe responses.
- Through consistent practice, drivers can better identify and react to potential hazards on the road.
