Dr. Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam, popularly known as the 'Missile Man of India,' was a distinguished scientist, aerospace engineer, and the 11th President of India. His pivotal role in India's development of ballistic missiles and space launch vehicles propelled him to become a national icon and a symbol of India's scientific prowess.
Early Life and Education
Born on October 15, 1931, in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu, APJ Abdul Kalam was the son of a boat owner. He displayed a passion for learning from a young age and, despite the family's humble beginnings, accomplished a great deal in both scientific research and public service.
Kalam received his bachelor's degree in Physics from St. Joseph's College, Tiruchirappalli, and a postgraduate diploma in Aerospace Engineering from the Madras Institute of Technology in 1960. He then earned a master's degree in Aerospace Engineering from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, in 1962.
Scientific Research and Career
Kalam joined the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) in 1963 as a scientist. In 1969, he joined the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) and was the project director of India's first Satellite Launch Vehicle (SLV-III) that successfully deployed the Rohini satellite in 1980.
In 1982, Kalam was appointed as the Chief Scientific Advisor to the Defense Minister and the Secretary, Department of Defence Research and Development (DRDO). In this position, he played a crucial role in transforming DRDO into a more efficient and result-oriented organization, focusing on self-reliance in arms production.
Perhaps Kalam's most notable achievement was the development and testing of the ballistic missile Agni in the 1980s. The Agni series of missiles, ranging from Agni-1 to Agni-V, remains one of India's most successful indigenous weapons systems.
