Study Notes
- The Science Education Institute (SEI) of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) provides scholarships to deserving and talented students for Science and Technology undergraduate programs
- A highly competitive science and technology scholarship examination is administered annually
- Passing the exam is an eligibility requirement for the DOST-SEI Undergraduate Scholarships
- The examination is available to incoming college freshmen, specifically graduating students from DepEd Senior High School
- A primer exists to help applicants prepare for the Science and Technology Scholarship Examination
- The primer includes sample test items from different domains to familiarize examinees with the exam's nature
Examination Format
- The DOST-SEI Undergraduate Science and Technology Scholarship Examination continually evolves to identify individuals likely to succeed in science and technology careers for the country's scientific development
- Taking the exam can be stressful, especially without knowing what to expect, thus the primer's preparation
- The examination is a multiple-choice test with separately timed sub-parts
- If one completes a part early, they cannot move forward or go back
- The actual examination is approximately four and a half hours, including instructions and form completion
- Examinees can bring and consume snacks, but must not smear test materials
- Going to the comfort room may be permitted with the Examiner's permission
Examination Parts
- Part I tests Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning
- Part II tests English, Science, Mathematics, and Mechanical-Technical skills
- Part III is a Self-Inventory
Sub-tests Format
- The examination includes multiple-choice questions with four answer options, where only one is correct
- Answers are indicated by shading the corresponding letter on the answer sheet
- Part I has Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning sub-parts
- Mental alertness, precision, and accuracy are valued for Part I
- Part II incorporates relatively difficult questions needing mental computation or critical analysis for giving an answer
- Time management is essential during Part II
- It involves answering familiar questions first, and then returning to difficult ones if time allows
- Part III involves answering questions about oneself, family, peers, education, and activities
- Part III has no right or wrong answers. Being serious and honest greatly matters
- There is an opportunity to get a closer look at components of the Examination and sample test items in following sections to prepare for the examination
Verbal Reasoning
- Verbal Reasoning assesses the ability to understand, analyze, and interpret information
- Verbal Reasoning measures one's ability to extract meaning from complex information and think logically and analytically
Non-Verbal Reasoning
- Non-Verbal Reasoning involves tasks such as visualizing, transforming images, recreating visual experiences, reasoning about shapes, and mentally manipulating spaces
English Language
- The English sub-test assesses the ability to apply English language rules, grammar, syntax, vocabulary, and reading comprehension
Science
- The Science subtest includes problem-items in Earth and Environmental Sciences, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics
- It tests the ability to accomplish various important scientific tasks
Mathematics
- Mathematics sub-test measures the ability to comprehend quantitative relationships and their representations
Mechanical-Technical
- The Mechanical-Technical sub-test assesses the ability to acquire information about everyday physics and comprehend mechanical relationships
- It incorporates mechanical and electrical problems, including items on physical forces
Self-Inventory
- The Self-Inventory includes short statements for evaluation or self-description to determine how closely each statement matches one's thoughts, actions, and feelings
- One must choose one of five possible responses for each statement: Not True of Me, Rarely True of Me, Sometimes True of Me, Often True of Me, Very Often True of Me
