Study Notes
- The Science Education Institute (SEI) of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) provides scholarship opportunities for talented students pursuing science and technology careers.
- A competitive qualifying examination is administered annually to select scholarship recipients.
- Applicants are required to meet eligibility criteria and successfully pass the examination to qualify for a scholarship.
Exam Structure and Time Allocation
- The DOST-SEI Undergraduate Scholarship Examination is a multiple-choice test.
- The exam consists of three main sections: Creative Reasoning and Language and Literature, Science, and Mathematics.
- Creative Reasoning and Language and Literature: 35 minutes
- Subdomains: Mechanical Reasoning, Spatial Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning, Language and Literature
- Science: 75 minutes
- Subdomains: Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science, Physics, Space Science
- Mathematics: 70 minutes
- Candidates should use remaining time from each part to review answers for that section only.
- Test takers cannot go back to previous parts or proceed to the next part before time is up.
- The test lasts approximately three hours, including instructions and filling out the answer sheet, and is designed to be taken in one sitting.
Exam Taking Tips
- Prepare the necessary items the day before the exam, including the test permit, school ID, parent waiver, pencils, eraser, sharpener, snacks, and water.
- Get adequate rest the night before the examination to ensure mental alertness.
- Arrive early at the designated Test Center to allow time to plan your trip and avoid being late.
- Adhere to proper dress code.
- Manage test time wisely.
- Answer easier items first, and return to difficult items if time remains.
- Follow all instructions carefully.
Part I: Creative Reasoning
- Mechanical Reasoning assesses the ability to understand everyday physics and mechanical relationships, involving mechanical and electrical problems and physical forces.
- Spatial Reasoning tests understanding of objects in two and three dimensions.
- Spatial Reasoning also tests the ability to draw conclusions with limited information, visualize, rotate, or disassemble objects, and reason about shape, measurement, depiction, and navigation.
- Verbal Reasoning examines ability to understand, analyze, interpret information, extract meaning from complex data, and think logically and analytically.
- Language and Literature assesses English language skills in grammar, syntax, vocabulary, and reading comprehension.
Part II: Science
- Science questions cover Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science, Physics, and Space Science.
- Sample Item: Legumes, with their nitrogen-fixing bacteria, are beneficial for agricultural production.
- Sample Item: The question about the final temperature of compressed hydrogen gas.
- Sample Item: Projectile motion questions
Part III: Mathematics
- Mathematics includes algebra, geometry, trigonometry, statistics, and calculus.
- The test evaluates the ability to comprehend quantitative relationships.
- Sample Item: In how many points do the graphs of 2(x + 1)² + (y - 2) 2 = 25 and 4(x + 1)² - 3(y - 2)² = 15 intersect?
- Sample Item: Probability problem involving drawing chips from an urn, specifically finding the probability of drawing one even and one odd number.
- Sample Item: Geometry problem asking to find the measure of an angle given the measures of intercepted arcs.
