Study Notes

Division Rules

  • When both operands in a division expression are integers, the result is an integer, and the fractional portion is discarded.
  • Examples of integer division:
    • 17 divided by 5 equals 3
    • 35 divided by 9 equals 3

Division with Real Numbers

  • When one or both operands in a division expression are real numbers, the result is a real number.
  • Examples of division with real numbers:
    • 17.5 divided by 5 equals 3.5
    • 17 divided by 5.5 equals 3.09
    • 17.5 divided by 5.5 equals 3.1818

Biometric-Input Devices

  • Biometrics is the science of measuring individual body characteristics to identify a person.
  • Biometric characteristics include fingerprints, hands, eyes, voice, and facial features.

Output Devices

  • Display screens include LED, LCD, and Plasma.
  • Display resolution is a measure of the number of pixels on the screen, represented in width by height.
  • Printers include plotters, photo printers, multi-function printers, and 3D printers.

Source Data-Entry Devices

  • Scanners are used to capture data.
  • Bar-Code Readers are used to capture data.
  • RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) is used to capture data.
  • Image capturing devices include digital cameras and webcams.

Audio-Input Devices

  • Speech-Recognition Systems use a microphone or telephone as an input device.
  • Speech-Recognition Systems convert a person's speech into digital signals by comparing against 200,000 or more stored patterns.

Processing

  • Cache temporarily stores instructions and data that the processor uses frequently to speed up processing.
  • The CPU works much faster than RAM, so it often must wait for information from RAM, which cache helps to alleviate.

Secondary Storage

  • Hard Disks are still the major secondary-storage device for desktop/tower computers.
  • Hard Disks use a read/write head to access and store data.

Learn about the rules of division in arithmetic operations, including division of integers and real numbers, and how to determine the type of answer.
