Study Notes

Distributed Information Systems:

  • Goal is to distribute information across several servers
  • Many distributed systems today are traditional information systems integrating legacy systems
  • Transactions form an atomic operation where all READ and WRITE operations are executed
  • Transactions combine a set of related operations into a unit that either completely succeeds or completely fails
  • Transaction Processing Monitors coordinate the execution of a transaction involving distributed data
  • Facilities for direct communication between applications, such as Remote Procedure Call (RPC) and Message-Oriented Middleware (MOM), are needed for multiple clients
  • Pervasive (ubiquitous) computing involves microprocessors embedded in everyday objects
  • Emerging research topics include distributed systems in which instability is the default behavior, and pervasive systems with small, battery-powered, mobile devices that lack human administrative control
  • Pervasive applications require devices to continuously be aware of contextual changes and encourage ad-hoc composition and sharing as the default
  • Examples of pervasive systems include home systems, electronic health systems, and sensor networks
  • Sensor networks are networks where nodes have the special capability of sensing parameters such as light intensity, temperature, pressure, and velocity
  • Sensor networks have many nodes, are simple, often battery-powered, and can be considered from a database perspective as distributed systems.
